history of immigration
- when did your family come to the US?
My family was always in the US.
- where did your family come from?
It depends on which part... my mothers
side is from America. My dads side
is from panama.
- why did your family move?
My family never moved its still the same.
My mom's side is still in America. My dad's
side is still in Panama.
- what are some of the reasons that people have migrated to the U.S?
lack of interest on part of the worker, the state's refusal to grant such permits to categories of foreign workers, institutional racism. For centuries, people from around the world have been coming to the United States. They come to work, get an education, escape oppression, start a new life, do business, visit friends, or sight see. Over the years, the United States has seen tremendous diversity in the countries immigrants come from and their reasons for coming here. In response to the incredible demand for permission to enter this country, the federal government has established a complex set of laws that determines who may enter this country and for what reasons. This chapter discusses legal immigration and travel to the United States and the responsibilities of employers under these laws.
- what groups have immigrated to the U.S. throughout history?
- how have they already treated people here?
Scots,Italians, Poles, Russians, Swedes, Chinese and, more recently, Mexicans, and Norwegian.
- how has immigration laws prevented certain groups of people from coming to the U.S.?
Racial segregation is the separation of different racial groups in daily life, such as eating in a restaurant, drinking from a drinking fountain, using a rest room, attending school, going to the movies, or in the rental or purchase of a home. Such as allowing a person of one race to work as a servant for a member of another race. Segregation can involve spatial separation of the races, and/or mandatory use of different institutions, such as schools and hospitals by people of different races.
- Whom did there laws exclude?
From 1776 until 1875, the United States had an open-door policy on immigration. Some of the earliest laws authorized the President to expel a foreign national who was deemed dangerous for the security of the U.S. Believe it or not, in 1864, the U.S. Congress passed legislation to encourage immigration into the United States!
Thereafter, in 1875, we had the first statutes excluding convicts and prostitutes. In 1882 came laws excluding "idiots," "lunatics," convicts and those who were likely to become a financial liability on the U.S.
- whom did these laws allow to enter?
Chinese Exclusion Acts, laws were passed to protect U.S. workers.
- who influenced these laws, and why?
Japanese, no Asians were allowed to enter the U.S.,Asia,Western Hemisphere.
- how have different groups challenged injustice?
In 1954, the McCarran-Walter Act established the basic structure of our present immigration law system. This Act instituted special racial quotas for Asians. It also created the Preference System for those with special skills, which translates into the present employment based categories.
?? I am not able to find this answer ??
- What can we learn from their experiences to help us today?
We can learn a lot because racism is very serious and should be taken seriously. The same for immigration because it can hurt a persons feelings in calling a person a(n)immigrant. The reason i know this is because i am from panama and i would now how it feels to call a person something that can really hurt them now and in the long run.
Warm up
The second week of May is “National Pet Week.” Dogs are America’s most popular pet. Why do you think so many people in America own dogs? If you have a dog, what do you enjoy most about them? If you don’t have a dog, would you like to own one? Why or why not?
- I think so many people have dogs because to guard there houses, to have company. (etc.)
- No i don't own a dog.
- No, i wish not to own a dog because a dog does what a person does most of a time.(eat, sleep, use the restroom,.&&. play)
